If you’re thinking about setting up a home theater in a small room or apartment, your options have traditionally been very limited. Great-sounding speakers traditionally took the form of bulky boxes, which required wires and other equipment, like a stereo receiver, to work. Sound bars changed all of that. These line-shaped speaker systems sit below your TV, require one outlet, and provide sound that’s way better than the speakers in built into your set. I’m a hard-to-please audio geek, and even I decided to ditch the idea of a multi-piece home theater system for a sound bar. A month later, it’s still the best personal tech purchase I’ve made this year. But sound bars come in many different forms: a 2.0 sound bar has all of its speakers built into a single enclosure; a 2.1 or 3.1 sound bar comes with a subwoofer that you plug in separately; a 5.1 sound bar system comes with a sub woofer and two additional satellite speakers for surround sound. Choosing the right type of sound bar system for you will depend on your personal preference, tolerance for wires, and space constraints, but there are good options available in all of these configurations. To give you a sense of the most popular options, we’ve turned to Amazon’s best-sellers lists, which collects the most popular items in several categories. The seven sound bars below are the ones Amazon shoppers rely on for excellent sound when they’re watching movies or TV. For additional choices be sure to check out our buying guides to find our picks for the best sound bars and best home theater systems. 1/ VIZIO SB3821-C6 Vizio Vizio SB3821-C6 38-Inch 2.1 Channel Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer, $149.99 Amazon rating: 3.9 out of 3000+ reviews If you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive sound bar that packs plenty of bass, Vizio’s SB3821-C6 is the one you’ll want. The 38-inch sound bar can get loud, (up to 100db) and comes with a cube-shaped subwoofer to deliver clear, low-end frequencies. The subwoofer connects to the sound bar wirelessly, which gives you more placement options and fewer wires to deal with. The SB3821-C6 connects to your TV via an optical cable, keeping its HDMI ports free for additional tech, like game consoles. The sound bar also has Bluetooth built in, so you can wirelessly stream audio to it from your computer, tablet, or phone. 2/ Sonos Beam Sonos Sonos Beam, $399.99 Amazon rating: 4.2 out of 100+ reviews The Sonos Beam is the third sound bar from the smart speaker startup, and it’s the smartest one on this list. The Beam has Amazon’s Alexa inside, which lets you control your smart-home accessories www.londonbc.co.uk , ask questions, or use one of the tens of thousands of Alexa skills. The Beam also supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 standard, which lets you play music on the sound bar by asking Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, just like you can using a HomePod. None of these smart features would matter if the Beam didn’t sound great, but it does. I bought the Beam last month, and it’s quickly become the best tech purchase I’ve made in 2018. Music, movies, video games, and TV sounds all sound excellent through the Beam’s speakers londonbc.co.uk , with just the right amount of bass and treble for voices and background noises to sound natural. The one downside to the Sonos Beam is its price. Not only is it significantly more expensive than the other sound bars on this list, but adding additional Sonos speakers to the Beam to create a 5.1 surround sound system will cost you even more. 3/ VIZIO SB3820-C6 Vizio Vizio SB3820-C6 38-Inch 2.0 Channel Sound Bar, $99.99 Amazon rating: 4.2 out of 900+ reviews Vizio’s SB3820-C6 is the same 38-inch sound bar as the one I mentioned previously, just without the subwoofer. This makes it a great option because it takes up even less space, can get as loud as 100db, supports Bluetooth, and costs under $100. It won’t have the same balanced sound as a sound bar with a subwoofer, but if space and price are your main concerns, you should strongly consider this as your best option. 4/ Yamaha YAS-108 Amazon Yamaha YAS-108 Sound Bar, $199.95 Amazon rating: 4.2 out of 40+ reviews Instead of separating the sound bar and subwoofer, Yamaha designed the YAS-108 with two built in subwoofers, delivering additional bass without taking up more room. You can hook the YAS-108 up to your TV using an HDMI or optical cable, and in this case I recommend HDMI. The YAS-108 takes advantage of an audio technology called HDMI ARC (audio return channel), which lets you control its volume and other functions directly through your TV remote. When you turn your TV on, the sound bar will turn on, and when you raise and lower the volume, it’ll adjust it on the sound bar instead of your TV’s speakers. You’ll still need to keep the sound bar’s remote around to make adjustments to its bass and treble, or to switch between different modes, but using one remote for basic functions will make your life a lot easier. 5/ GooBang Doo ABOX Soundbar GooBang Doo ABOX Amazon GooBang Doo ABOX Soundbar, $124.99 Amazon rating: 4.5 out of 70+ reviews GooBang Doo’s ABOX sound bar combines some of the best features from sound bars I’ve mentioned earlier and presents it in a low-cost package. The sound bar can reach up to 110db, and has a subwoofer to help its lower frequencies sound more rich. The subwoofer is wired, though, so it’ll need to be close to the sound bar unless you’re comfortable running a cable across your entire living room. The sound bar does support Bluetooth, though, so you’ll be able to wirelessly stream audio from your computer, tablet, or phone if you’d like. 6/ Bose Solo 5 TV Sound System Bose Bose Solo 5 TV Sound System, $249 Amazon rating: 4.0 out of 800+ reviews At 21.5 inches long, Bose’s Solo 5 is the most compact sound bar on this list, but it has a lot of features packed into it. The sound bar can connect to your TV over an optical cable, and has Bluetooth built into it for wireless music streaming. One of the Solo 5’s standout features is its clear dialogue mode, which tunes the sound bar to make it easy to hear voices more easily. A speaker’s size can have an impact on its audio quality — bigger is typically better — but the Solo 5’s compact design works to its advantage. It makes the sound bar a great choice if you’re space constrained, and Bose even has an inexpensive mounting kit available if you’d like to attach it directly to your wall. 7/ VIZIO SB3621n-F8M Vizio VIZIO SB3621n-F8M 36″ 2.1 Channel Sound Bar System, $179.99 Amazon: 4.5 out of 30+ reviews Vizio’s SB3621n-F8M is a smaller, updated version of the 2.1 Vizio sound bar. Despite being two inches shorter than the previous model, this sound bar can still produce sound up to 100db. The subwoofer it’s bundled with is wireless, which gives you more placement options, while rounding out the bar’s sound with additional bass. The SB3621n-F8M has bluetooth built in, so you can stream music to it from your phone, tablet or computer, but it also supports a Google-created technology called Chromecast. By using Chromecast-enabled apps on your phone or tablet you can send music and video directly to the sound bar, instead of having to use a media streaming dongle.
