One thing I love to see is for a JRPG that has a tactical battle system that fit for both short and long battles. You could spend most of the game playing as a regular sized RPG party, exploring towns and dungeons and whatnot, and regular fights would feature a grid based layout and a tactical battle system but with only a small number of characters/enemies so that battles don take too long to complete. Then you have larger, army battles similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem in which you control a larger number of characters and fight more enemies.
